Firm President, Andrew R. Yarmus, P.E., F.NSPE, was asked to represent the New York State Society of Professional Engineers at the New York State Board Meeting for Engineering, Land Surveying, and Geology in Buffalo, NY. It was Mr. Yarmus’ honor and privilege to be able to represent the organization and Professional Engineers of NYS at this meeting.

Stronger Flood Protection Standards Are Coming for New Hospitals, Schools and Apartments


The International Code Council has approved stronger building codes to protect hospitals, schools and other structures from flooding

On May 7th Scientific American reported that “many new hospitals, schools, apartment buildings and other structures would be built with extra flood protection under a major revision to an international building code approved Friday…A nonprofit that writes model building codes widely used in the U.S. took a step toward requiring that some newly built structures are constructed well above local flood level — and expanding the areas where elevation is required…The standards were approved overwhelmingly Friday at a hearing in Orlando by a committee of the code-writing group, the International Code Council, despite building industry opposition…The council will take a final vote in 2026 and the new standards would take effect in 2027”.

2024 NYC Construction Safety Report

On June 4th The New York City Department of Buildings Building News reported “ DOB’s annual construction safety report is a comprehensive review of the building construction-related work site incidents in the five boroughs from the past year, providing critical transparency to the public on the state of construction safety in our city. The calendar year 2024 safety report was recently published, highlighting the most recent full year of data the department has on this critical topic…This newly released report showed major improvements for the New York City construction industry, with worker injuries dropping by 30 percent compared to 2023, and worker fatalities remaining at a 10-year low.
