What’s New
All too often, we are retained to investigate a worksite accident involving the use of a grinder without a protective safety guard. NYS Labor Laws and Industrial Code Rule 23 specifically require that such power-driven hand tools be equipped and used with appropriate safety guards in place. We were excited to recently learn that a prominent equipment manufacturer is claiming to have developed the “first in concept” handheld grinder with a non-removable guard in order to address this issue.

Building codes support disaster preparedness and resilience
On August 9th The International Code Council reported that “building codes and standards have long been a silent partner in the health, safety and welfare of communities and are becoming increasingly more important in society. Today’s leaders face a multitude of risks, including extreme weather events such as hurricanes, tornadoes, straight-line winds, flooding, drought and wildfires as well as global risks from communicable disease outbreaks and environmental change…Building codes and standards continue to provide a safe structural foundation for communities as a trusted and proven resource and are regularly evolving to meet the challenges of these dynamic threats”. The importance of such protections became even more apparent this week with the landfall of Hurricane Ida in the United States.
