Is Your Backyard Deck a Safety Hazard?
On July 16th AAA reported that “for many Americans, the backyard deck is a favorite recreational area to get together with family…It doesn’t feel like a dangerous place, but if it’s not built correctly or properly maintained it could become one. The Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates that around 20 million decks across the country are either structurally unsound or a potential hazard in some way, putting American families at risk for injury”. With many people enjoying outdoor time with friends and family during this summer, we urge our readers to remain vigilant about the safety of such structures.

OSHA Directive Guides Silica Inspections
On July 16th the American Society of Safety Professionals reported that “OSHA’s newest compliance directive, Inspection Procedures for the Respirable Crystalline Silica Standards, aims to ensure uniformity in inspection and enforcement procedures when the agency assesses respirable crystalline silica exposures in general industry, maritime and construction…The new directive provides OSHA compliance safety and health officers with guidance on how to enforce the silica standards’ requirements…The directive also aims to clarify guidance on several topics, such as alternative exposure control methods when a construction employer does not fully and properly implement Table 1; variability in sampling; multiemployer situations; and temporary workers”.
